6 Reasons Why All Natural Skincare Matters

1.  Our skin is the largest organ in our body.

The average weight of skin in the body is about 10,886 grams which varies according to the size and weight of the person.  Human skin is made up of different ectodermic tissues and it protects all the inner body organs like the liver, glands, stomach, heart, etc. which is why it's so important to keep it healthy.

2.  Our skin absorbs approximately 60% of what we put on it.

Yes that's right, 60%!  Skin is permeable which means that anything applied doesn't just sit on it, it is absorbed through it into the blood stream.  Medical research indicates that many cosmetic ingredients include carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substances and that they do indeed penetrate the skin and wind up in our blood.  This exposes us to a whole host of chemicals that would never be allowed to be ingested as a food or drug but are winding up in our body nonetheless.  Many of these ingredients don't cause immediate reactions but can slowly build up in us through repeated use over time resulting in serious health conditions which can lead to death.

3.  On average, a woman puts anywhere from 168-515 chemicals A DAY on her face and body while on average, a man puts on about half that amount.

Almost 13,000 chemicals are used in cosmetics and only about 10% have been evaluated for safety by the FDA.  The average woman uses about 12 personal care products and/or cosmetics a day, containing hundreds of chemicals combined.  While most men use fewer products, they're still exposed to over a hundred chemicals daily.  Teens on average use about 17 personal care products a day, leaving them exposed to even more.  Clearly, such chemical exposures are not insignificant especially when they occur virtually daily for a lifetime.

4.  Almost 30% of conventional skincare ingredients act like hormones in the body.

Most skincare products contain a diverse combination of chemicals and many of them are considered hormone disruptors.  Hormone disruptors can affect how estrogen and other hormones act in the body by blocking or mimicking them which throws off the body's hormonal balance.  Because estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer develop and grow, many woman choose to limit their exposure to these chemicals that can act like estrogen.

5.  The EU has banned over 1,000 chemical ingredients used in skincare, while the FDA has only banned 9.

In the US, only about 10% of chemicals used in cosmetics have been evaluated for safety.  Although the FDA has the authority to regulate harmful ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products, they don't often exercise it.  Cosmetics can be sold without any type of approval necessary.  According to the FDA, only after a product is deemed harmful, adulterated, or misbranded can the FDA take regulatory action.

 6.  Chemicals that are found in skincare are also found in brake fluid, pesticides, vaccines, engine degreasers, anti-freeze, and radioactive substances just to name a few.

Here are a few bad ingredients to watch out for:

-Acrylates, Benzophenone & Related Compounds, Butylated Compounds, Carbon Black, Carcinogens, Coal Tar, Ethanolamine Compounds (MEA, DEA, TEA, etc.), Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives, Homosalate, Hydroquinone, Lead & Other Heavy Metals, Methylisothiazolinone & Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Mica, Nail Polish Removers, Nitrosamines, Octinoxate, PABA, Petrolatum & Petroleum Jelly, Phenoxyethanol, Polyacrylamide, Polytetrafluoroethylene, P-Phenulenediamine, Parabens, Phthalates, Quaternium-15, Resorcinol, Retinol & Retinol Compounds, Talc, Titanium Dioxide, Toluene, Triclosan
